Acum.” Și acolo, în inbox-ul ei, același mesaj:
„Congratulations! We have the pleasure to inform you that you have been nominated a principal finalist, as a result of the interview for the 2026-2027 Fulbright-RAF Scholar Award (Agricultural Extension Services).”
Two friends, two Fulbright grants, from Bucharest to Athens
We share an office, but that’s the least interesting thing about us. The truth is, we’re close friends. Same department (Faculty of Land Reclamation and Environmental Engineering, University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest), same field, the same coffee breaks where we complain about the same deadlines, and just as many conversations that have nothing to do with work. So when we decided to apply for Fulbright, doing it together felt like the most natural thing in the world. What never crossed our minds, because you just don’t let yourself go there, was that we might both win.
We sent in our applications; then came the interviews, on different days. Veronica went first. The next day it was my turn, and then, silence. The kind of silence where you refresh your inbox more often than you’d like to admit.
I found out first. I opened the email and read it twice, just to be sure I wasn’t imagining it. The first thing I did was call Vero. „Check your email. Right now.” And there it was, in her inbox, the same message:
„Congratulations! We have the pleasure to inform you that you have been nominated a principal finalist, as a result of the interview for the 2026-2027 Fulbright-RAF Scholar Award (Agricultural Extension Services).”
What were the odds? We don’t know the exact number, and maybe we shouldn’t know. A Fulbright grant from Romania is hard to land even for one person. For two friends from the same office to land it the same year, at the same university, that’s the kind of coincidence you only find in the movies.
This blog is the story of what comes next. Four months far from home, in a new world, with everything we’ll learn, everything that will surprise us, and everything we’ll carry back home. We’re writing it together, because that’s how it all began: with a friendship, a shared office, and a question we’re still smiling about.
What were the odds? Turns out, exactly right.
